It Goes Down in the DM: Direct Messages & Your Social Media Marketing Funnel

DON’T DOUBT THE DMS! When using social media for business, direct messages are an integral part of a digital marketing strategy.

I know we like to say DMs are sketchy. There is some merit to that IF that is the only method of communication a business has. However, direct messaging is beneficial.

Most people aren't ready to buy the first time they inquire about a service. They're nervous about trying something new. They're nervous about the cost. They might even be nervous about just reaching out! Social anxiety is real! For these reasons, I am always happy to answer simple questions via DM.

I know what you're thinking, and yes, there are nuanced questions that require a more detailed response. In those cases, I will redirect to my website. Still, allowing potential customers to communicate through direct messages has been the start of more than a few customer relationships.

Here's why Direct Messaging is a marketing channel you should use.

    1. Keep the buyer's attention.

A goal of most digital marketing is to draw people to a website. However, in a world where we're competing for the attention of customers, you want them to switch apps/platforms as little as possible.

Why? Because that increases the time they spend interacting with your content versus getting distracted by someone else's. Have you ever closed an app to do something in a different tab and forgotten what you were doing as soon as you opened the new tab? Your customers probably do this too.

If you already have their attention, keep it.

    2. Create relationships.

People buy from brands they trust. Every interaction is an opportunity to build that trust. Be conversational and concise so they get the information they need, and feel comfortable buying your service.

Try to respond sooner than later so they know you're serious about business, but also so they know you value them as a potential customer.

    3. Faster communication.

When a potential customer has a quick question, it's easier for them to send a direct message than to go to your website, find the email link, and send you an email.

This is faster for you because you don't have to open your email (though you should be checking it regularly), and you can respond more casually than with email. Meaning you don't have to sit there, frozen thinking of an ultra-professional response.

    4. It's the start of your funnel.

Every interaction is a part of the customer journey, aka the funnel from interest to purchase. Based on the information you collect from their message you can make suggestions, or even tell them exactly where to find what they need within your website.

You're on Social Media all the time anyway...

It's 2023. Business casual is the new business. Let people reach you where they're already at. You should 100% still have a professional email that matches your domain, but don't feel like you can't use direct messaging to connect with potential customers too.

DID YOU KNOW? Meta Business Suite has some very thorough direct messaging automation to make this even easier. You can:
